Coinciding with the celebration of 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (IY2017) as declared by the United Nation General Assembly, Tourism EXPO Japan Executive Committee conducted the first ever Ministerial Round Table in collaboration with UNWTO on the theme of “Sustainable Tourism for Development” on September 21, 2017 at Tokyo Big Sight.
The Honorable Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, Secretary of Tourism, Mexico, this year’s one of the two keynote speakers, arrived in Tokyo early in the morning of September 20, which was the day of a large-scale earthquake which occurred near Mexico City. After a 6-hour stay in Tokyo, he returned to Mexico by the afternoon flight. On the opening day, September 21, his keynote speech was read by Chief of Tourism Minister’s Office on his behalf. All the participants in the convention hall gave a silent prayer to the disaster victims of the Mexico earthquake before his speech.
The second keynote speaker, the Honorable Dato’ Seri Mohamed Nazri bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Malaysia, made a speech about “Sustainable Tourism for Development” in the frame of global tourism.
Tourism Ministers/Vice Ministers/General Directors of 14 countries and four chief executive officers of international tourism organizations spoke about their understanding and engagement in the following five key areas of the IY2017.
- Inclusive and sustainable economic growth;
- Social inclusiveness, employment and poverty reduction;
- Resource efficiency; environmental protection and climate change;
- Cultural values, diversity and heritage;
- Mutual understanding, peace and security.
The speakers shared their countries’ goals and policies for sustainable tourism so that we can extract the challenges which the sector as a whole needs to deal with to ensure that it contributes in a valuable and appreciative manner to the Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
